Warm season precipitation signal in δ 2 H values of wood lignin methoxyl groups from high elevation larch trees in Switzerland

RATIONALE In this study, we tested stable hydrogen isotope ratios of wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ 2Hmethoxyl values) as a palaeoclimate proxy in dendrochronology. This is a quite new method in the field of dendrochronology and the sample preparation is much simpler than the methods used before to measure δ2H values from wood. METHODS We measured δ 2Hmethoxyl values in high elevation larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) from Simplon Valley (southern Switzerland). Coadsorption of hydrogen and deuterium on zeolites at cryogenic temperatures : influence of the sorbent’s properties on selectivity

The adsorption of hydrogen and deuterium (single gases and mixtures) was studied on a series of zeolites with varied parameters (Si/Al ratio, nature of the charge-compensating cation, pore geometry and diameter of pore aperture). Thermodynamic adsorption selectivities towards deuterium with respect to hydrogen were measured in a large pressure range (0.1 – 1000 hPa) and for several temperatures (45 – 100 K). The adsorption selectivity was assessed using direct coadsorption measurements performed by manometry coupled with mass spectrometry. Allochthony, fatty acid and mercury trends in muscle of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) along boreal environmental gradients

Environmental change, including joint effects of increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorus (TP) in boreal northern lakes could potentially affects food web energy sources and the biochemical composition of organisms. These environmental stressors are enhanced by anthropogenic land-use and can decrease the quality of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in seston and zooplankton, and therefore, possibly cascading up to fish. In contrast, the content of mercury in fish increases with lake browning potentially amplified by intensive forestry practises. Detection of deuterium retention by LIBS at different background pressures

ITER plans foresee the quantitative diagnostics of fuel retention in reactor walls at near-atmospheric pressures. Using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for this purpose assumes a reliable resolving of Balmer α-lines of hydrogen isotopes in spectra of plasma produced by focused laser radiation onto the target surface. To develop LIBS for quantitative diagnostics of fuel retention during the maintenance breaks of ITER, the effect of background gas pressure on the laser-induced plasma characteristics has been studied. Enhancement of D 2 /H 2 Selectivity in Zeolite A through Partial Na–K Exchange: Single-Gas and Coadsorption Studies at 45–77 K

International audience; We report D2/H2 adsorption selectivities under cryogenic temperatures (45-77 K) in Na and K-Na exchanged zeolites A (LTA structural code) measured by co-adsorption technique. These values are systematically compared with Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) predictions based on the single gas adsorption isotherms. For NaA zeolite the evolution of the selectivity as a function of total pressure and gas mixture composition at 77 K shows ideal behavior. In contrast, as temperature decreases, D2/H2 selectivity rises exponentially and its values can no longer be predicted by IAST. VolcDeGas: A program for modelling hydrogen isotope fractionation during degassing of rhyolitic melts

Magma degassing mechanisms are key determinants of explosive and effusive eruption styles. Paired measurements of H2O content and hydrogen isotopic ratios (e.g., dD) in pyroclastic and effusive products can elucidate end-member degassing mechanisms (e.g. closed and open system) during eruption.  Here we present VolcDeGas, a MatLab program that models dD-H2O degassing trajectories of rhyolitic magma.  Operating within an intuitive GUI, VolcDeGas calculates degassing paths based on: initial dD (in ‰), the H2O content of the melt (wt.%), degassing step size, and temperature.  VolcDeGas also calculates hydrous speciation based on either empirical models or analytical data, and incorporates this…

Role of elastic and electronic interactions in trapping of hydrogen by impurities in transition metals

The interplay between the lattice distortion and the electronic contributions to the trapping of migrating hydrogen isotopes by substitutional impurities is investigated. We use a comprehensive calculational scheme incorporating (i) the effective-medium theory for the electronic interaction, (ii) the lattice Green’s function for elastic coupling, and (iii) the hydrogen quantum motion. The calculations for Ti and Cr impurities in V host show that lattice strain effects dominate. Cr, which otherwise provides an electronic trap site, does not induce trapping when elastic effects are incorporated. The situation in the case of Ti is just the reverse.
